FAQ – Frequently asked questions

1) Do you make timber gates bespoke?

Yes—we specialise in made-to-measure timber gates. While our listed sizes provide a pricing guide, nearly all of our driveway and garden gates are crafted to fit your exact dimensions.

Pricing tip: For custom widths, simply select the next standard size up (e.g. choose the 8′ price for a 7′2″ gate). At checkout, add your precise measurements in the comments section, or get in touch with us directly to place your bespoke order.

2) How should I measure for a bespoke gate?

STEP ONE: We recommend taking three measurements from between the posts – top, middle & bottom.

STEP TWO: Reduce the smallest measurements by 40mm for driveway gate (allowing 15mm each side and 10mm in the middle), or 20mm for single gates (allowing 10mm each side). This is the measurements of the width of the gate required, providing a neat fit while allowing for natural swelling that is a feature of timber gates and your hinges.

3) What is the lead time on bespoke gates?

Our current lead time for bespoke timber gates is approximately 4–6 weeks from the date of order. This allows time for precision manufacturing, treatment (if requested), and quality checks before delivery.

4) How do wooden acoustic panels work?

Acoustic panels or noise-stop barriers are constructed to help repel unwanted sound, which will reduce noise levels and tackle both noise and echo. Perfect for if you live in a busy area, or run a business where you don’t want unnecessary noise.

5) How do I know if my garden is suitable for a robotic lawn mower?

With a wide range of Husqvarna Automower® models available, there’s nearly a perfect fit for every type of garden—from small urban lawns to large, complex landscapes with slopes, narrow passages, or multiple zones.

If you’re unsure whether a robotic mower is right for your space, we’re here to help. Contact us to arrange a free site visit, where we’ll assess your garden and recommend the most suitable model based on your layout and needs.

6) How will my items be shipped?

We deliver using our own fleet of vehicles and experienced drivers to ensure your order—regardless of size or quantity—arrives safely and securely. In cases where we use a trusted external courier, you’ll be notified in advance and provided with tracking details.

7) Do I need to be in for delivery?

As long as there is a safe area you don’t need to be in for delivery. If there is no safe place the delivery can be re-arrange to another date that suits you!

8) How much is shipping?

We do charge a small fee for shipping. This can be calculated on the product page or the basket/checkout page.

9) Can I return my product?

If for any reason you are not satisfied with your purchase. Goods can be returned within 14 days for a full refund or within 28 days for an exchange at the store you purchased them from only.

Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Bespoke goods such as gates, convex/concave panels, paling panels, pergolas, timber cut to size, brown timber treated to order and sale items. To complete your return, we require a receipt or proof of purchase.

There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted due to a 25% restocking charge. This includes any timber and paving products order over £500.

How do I choose the right fence panels for my garden?

When choosing fence panels for your garden, it’s important to consider your garden’s purpose, privacy needs, and style preferences. Decorative panels like trellis or picket fences work well for aesthetics and light borders, while close-board and lap panels offer more privacy and wind resistance. You’ll also want to think about maintenance. Pressure-treated panels last longer with less upkeep. If security is a concern, go for solid, tall panels. A useful thing to do is also to measure your garden space accurately and check local planning regulations, so that you are aware of any restrictions.

How do I maintain and clean decking boards?

To maintain your decking boards, you should regularly sweep away leaves and debris to prevent mould growth and staining. Clean your boards at least once a year using a decking cleaner or a mild detergent with warm water and a stiff brush. For stubborn dirt or algae, use a pressure washer on a low setting. Reapply decking oil, stain, or sealant every couple of years to protect against moisture and UV damage. At Hales Sawmills, we stock durable decking boards and treatments designed to help keep your outdoor space looking its best year-round.

What are the key benefits of installing wooden driveway gates?

Wooden driveway gates offer both security and style for your property. They create a natural, welcoming entrance while helping to protect your home from unauthorised access. Timber gates are strong, customisable, and available in various designs, from traditional to modern. They can also provide added privacy and noise reduction.

What should I consider when choosing a shed for my garden?

When choosing a garden shed, consider what you’ll use it for. This could be storage, a workshop, or a garden retreat. Size is crucial; so be sure to measure your space and account for roof overhangs and access paths. Choose between overlap or tongue-and-groove panels depending on your budget and durability needs. Look for pressure-treated timber for long-lasting protection against rot and insects. Think about window options, roof style, and security features too. At Hales Sawmills, we offer a wide selection of timber sheds in various sizes and styles to suit every garden and purpose.

What’s the difference between exterior paint and interior paint?

Exterior paint is specially formulated to withstand weather, moisture, and UV exposure, making it ideal for timber cladding, fences, sheds, and gates. It contains additives that help prevent mould, fading, and cracking. Using interior paint outdoors can lead to peeling and damage. At Hales Sawmills, we stock a range of high-performance exterior paints designed to protect and enhance your outdoor timber features for years to come.
